A common orthodontic emergency is a broken braces bracket. Brackets often become damaged because they are fragile and can become damaged from several things, including:

– Eating foods that can be damaging to braces

– An injury to the mouth

– Brushing teeth too vigorously or incorrectly in some way

– Using a toothpick

– Flossing too vigorously

In the case of an orthodontic emergency, there are certain steps that Dr. Ben Frandsen recommends that you follow.

Examine the Damage & Take Action

The first thing you need to do is check the extent of the damage. If the bracket is still attached to the wire, leave it be. If the bracket is still attached, but is sticking out, use a cotton swab to gently push it back into place. Orthodontic wax can be used to hold the bracket in its correct position until you come to Frandsen Orthodontics. If the wires are protruding, press them back against the tooth and cover the wire with orthodontic wax to prevent any injury to the inside of your mouth.

Schedule an Appointment

Please schedule an appointment with our dentist in Orem, Utah, as soon as you can to have the bracket repaired. Tell us whether or not you will bring the bracket with you to your orthodontic appointment.

Minimize Harm

Regularly rinse out your mouth with salt water to promote healing in the time leading up to your orthodontic appointment. In addition, eat soft foods to avoid further damage to your braces. Avoid foods that are crunchy or hard.
